Fairfax, VA (October 2, 2005)--The George Mason women's soccer team took on arguably two of the best teams in the conference this weekend, was depleted with injuries, and consequently came up empty in both games. Today, the James Madison Dukes (7-4-0/2-1) entered the match-up with a conference loss only to VCU and left with a shut-out defeating the Patriots, 3-0 at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots fall to 5-6-0, 1-2 in the CAA, with the loss.
"We are putting ourselves in good scoring positions, but coming up empty on our chances," said Coach Drake. "We have made some progress and I feel that with some balls bouncing our way and with a continued effort in that area we will get our goals and win some of these hard fought games."
It didn't take long for the Dukes to put the first goal on the board, as Karly Skladany was in front of the net on a corner kick and knocked in the rebounded ball past goalkeeper Kasey Davenport at 43:38. Madison's Kimmy Germain was credited with the assist. The Dukes continued to attack the Mason defense, but the Patriots played solid shutting down a number of attempts on goal to keep the score at 1-0 at the half.
The shots were down by both teams in the second period, as Mason out-shot James Madison 7-5 in the second half. The Dukes Annie Lowry became the spark on offense Madison needed to solidify the win as she scored two goals, the first in the 76th minute on a pass from Teri Maykoski. Her second goal was into the left side of the net past Davenport from 10-yards out assisted by Vanessa Brizzi.
Mason attempted 16 shots with a team-high five from Jessica Paris, who was still playing with a foot injury, and Danielle MacDonald who had four shots, two on goal. James Madison attempted 15 shots, four by both Lowry and Sklandany.
The women are back on the home turf Friday at 7 p.m. with a conference game against one of the CAA's newest member schools Northeastern.
