ATLANTA -- Georgia State freshman forward Kay Harbrueger scored a goal and assisted on the game-winner in leading Georgia State to a 4-0 shutout victory over George Mason on Sunday, Oct. 16 in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action at Panthersville Field. The Lady Panthers earned their first win as a member of the CAA in snapping a six-game losing streak.
Georgia State (7-9-0, 1-6-0 CAA) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead two minutes into the contest as freshman midfielder Candace Gonzales scored her first collegiate goal off a Harbrueger corner kick. Gonzales, who tallied the eventual game-winner, knocked the ball in off a deflection into the right corner of the net. Sophomore forward Nathalie Carter gave the Lady Panthers a 2-0 lead at halftime as she recorded her fifth goal of the season. Carter collected a chip pass from senior Dana Van Winkle and dribbled up the left side of the field and rocketed the ball on a cross shot into the right side of the net at the 16:51 mark.
George Mason (7-8-0, 3-4-0 CAA) held a 6-5 advantage in shots at halftime, but couldn't convert any of its chances. The Patriots managed to outshoot the Lady Panthers, 12-8.
In the second half, Harbrueger scored her fourth goal of the season off an Amanda Schneider pass and dribbled around GMU's goalkeeper and fired the ball into the left side of the net for a 3-0 advantage. Junior forward Lauren Chavez added an insurance goal eight minutes later as junior Tenisha Cohen launched a cross into the box and Chavez headed the ball into the left top corner for a 4-0 lead. Chavez recorded her team-leading ninth goal of the season and also matched her single season career mark.
Senior goalkeeper Alexa Pasquarelli collected six saves in the net for Georgia State as she combined with junior Sharon Jassen for the shutout. GMU's Kasey Davenport received the loss after making one save before being replaced by Olivia Brown.
The women's soccer team will return to action on Friday, Oct. 21 whey they host Delaware with the game slated to begin at 7 p.m.
