NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion used a 23-5 run to begin the second half and went on to defeat visiting George Mason 71-58 in men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Ted Constant Center.

Freshman forward Will Thomas (Baltimore, Md.) led the Patriots (7-7-2-3 CAA) with career-highs of 12 points and 11 rebounds for his first career double-double. Junior forward Alex Loughton led the Monarchs (15-2, 5-0 CAA) with a double-double, posting game-highs with 18 points and 12 boards.

With the game tied at 23-23 with 6:27 remaining in the first half, ODU went on a 10-0 run, led by back-to-back 3-pointers from guards Drew Williamson and Isaiah Hunter and took a 36-29 lead going into halftime.

The Monarchs extended the advantage in the second period with the 23-5 spurt, as Mason made only two field goals during the first 11 minutes of the stanza, giving ODU its biggest lead of the game at 26 points, 60-34, with 9:32 left.

Three-point baskets from Patriot freshman guards Folarin Campbell (Silver Spring, Md.) and John Vaughan (Lanham, Md.) cut the deficit to 68-50 with two minutes remaining in the contest. Two free throws from Thomas and a 3-pointer from freshman guard Jordan Carter (Indianapolis, Ind.) at the buzzer ended the game for the Patriots, with ODU taking the 71-58 margin.

Junior forward Jai Lewis (Aberdeen, Md.) totaled 11 points for Mason, while junior guard Lamar Butler (Oxon Hill, Md.) finished with nine. Junior guard Tony Skinn (Takoma Park, Md.) was held scoreless, going 0-for-11 from the floor. Vaughan and Campbell each finished with eight points.

Monarchs' guard Isaiah Hunter registered 14 points, while guard Drew Williamson added 11 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists.

As a team, ODU out-rebounded George Mason 38-37, and out shot the Patriots 43 percent to 40 percent. The Monarchs connected on 11 three-pointers during the contest, compared to only four for the Patriots. Old Dominion also had 18 assists.

George Mason returns to action Wednesday when the team hosts Drexel at 7 p.m. at the Patriot Center.
