FAIRFAX, Va. - Harvard and William & Mary each posted shut out non-conference women's soccer victories Thursday at the George Mason/Burger King Invitational at George Mason Stadium. The Tribe defeated Georgetown 3-0 in the afternoon contest, while the Crimson bested host George Mason 2-0 in the evening match.

William & Mary notched its first win of the year, improving to 1-2-2 on the season, while the Hoyas dropped to 3-2-0. Harvard also earned its first victory of 2004, moving to 1-2-0 overall. The Patriots, who fell for the second straight contest, sit at 1-3-1.

In the first match of the day, William & Mary struck early as Lydia Sturgis served the ball from the left off a corner kick into the box, where Anna Young posted the game's first goal 8:58 into the contest, putting the Tribe up, 1-0. The College maintained its advantage halfway into the second period until leading scorer, Taline Tahmassian, scored after she received a right cross into the left front side of the box from Anna Pawlow in the 48th minute for her third goal of the season. Katie Hogwood iced the contest for William & Mary at 73:39. Hoya keeper Jade Higgins stopped her first shot at point blank range. Hogwood collected the rebound and pasted her second attempt into the lower right corner of the net, giving W&M its 3-0 win. The Hoyas out shot the Tribe, 16-8.

Game two witnessed Harvard best George Mason with goals in each of the two periods. Sara Sedgwick and Megan Merrit assisted on Emily Colvin's second marker of the season. Colvin took the feed 15 yards in front of the goal and launched her score into the top left corner at 16:52. The Crimson received an insurance goal in the 52nd minute as Liz Lima fed a through ball down the left side of the field to Katie Johnston, who sent the ball into lower left side of the goal for Harvard's 2-0 lead. Mason held an 8-5 shot advantage over the Crimson.

The two teams trade partners Saturday for day two of the George Mason/Burger King Invitational. In the first match, William & Mary and Harvard will battle for bragging rights beginning at noon at George Mason Stadium. Mason and Georgetown are pitted in the second contest, which starts at 2:30 p.m., as Patriot head coach Diane Drake faces off against her former team and former assistant coach, Dave Nolan, who is now the head coach for the Hoyas.
