Box Score

BOSTON - George Mason's late game rally fell short as the Patriots dropped a 3-2 decision in non-conference women's soccer action Friday night at Nickerson Field. For Mason, it was their first loss of the season as the team fell to 1-1-1 on the year, while the Terriers remained undefeated and moved to 3-0-0.

George Mason senior forward Sarah Wilkinson (Lincoln University, Pa.) netted a goal, as did classmate Dianna Russini (Old Tappan, N.J.). Terrier junior Melissa Shulman scored a pair of markers, while junior Meghan Cook added a goal and an assist.

Shulman scored her first goal of the season 23 minutes into the match when she fired the ball into the net from just outside the five-yard box. The ball had deflected off a defender, setting up the goal.

Cook upped the Terriers' lead to 2-0 with her second goal of the season. She took a direct kick near the 18-yard box and headed it to the corner of the net, where it then deflected off a Patriot defender. George Mason senior goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin (Hawthorne, N.Y.) leaped for the ball, but was past the goal line when she caught it. Shulman and Cook combined their efforts for the Terriers' final goal at 53:03.

The Patriots scored their first marker at 80:45 when Wilkinson took a corner kick from junior midfielder Danielle MacDonald (Burke, Va.). Then, with less than two minutes left in regulation, Russini placed the ball into the lower right corner after receiving it in front of the net from freshman forward Rachel Wiggins (Acworth, Ga.), trimming the margin to 3-2 in favor of Boston. George Mason would get no closer.

Coughlin allowed three goals and finished with one save in 65:29 minutes of action. Sophomore goalie Olivia Brown (Des Moines, Wash.) posted one save in 24:31. Stephanie Dreyer had two saves and picked up the win after starting in goal for the Terriers in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Christina Reuter made four saves and allowed both Patriot goals in the second half.

George Mason visits Brown Sunday at 1 p.m.
