FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason and Navy battled to a 1-1 tie in women's collegiate soccer action on a humid Sunday afternoon at George Mason Stadium. The host Patriots move to 1-0-1 on the season, while Mid-Atlantic regional foe Navy goes to 0-1-1 overall.
Sophomore forward Meggie Curran of Navy scored the game's first goal of the day off a crossing pass from freshman forward Kari Weniger at 13:49. Weniger fed the ball from the right side into the box, where Curran shot it into the lower left corner of the net.
The Patriots evened the contest in the 37th minute behind the foot of senior forward Dianna Russini (Old Tappan, N.J.), who centered the ball to freshman midfielder Sarah Fack (Algonquin, Ill.) roughly 15 yards out. Approaching the box, Fack fed the ball back to Russini on the left and she posted a marker to the low right corner.
Mason had several shot attempts late in the second period and the extra frames, but couldn't convert. The Patriots out shot the Midshipmen 19-6 overall, including 11-2 in the second frame.
George Mason senior goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin (Hawthorne, N.Y.) made four saves, while Navy senior goalkeeper Kim Bonafede stopped seven tallies.
George Mason visits Boston University Friday at 7 p.m. and takes on Brown next Sunday at 1 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
