FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason's women's soccer team opened its 2004 season under new head coach Diane Drake with a 2-0 victory over visiting Miami Friday evening at George Mason Stadium. The Patriots are 1-0 overall while the Hurricanes begin the year at 0-1.

Senior forward Sarah Wilkinson (Lincoln University, Pa.) opened the scoring for Mason with a header into the top right corner of the net in the 30th minute. The play was set up after sophomore forward L.J. Williams (Fairfax Station, Va.) went down with a leg injury roughly five minutes before. Drake elected to play on with her team down a player against a Cane squad at full strength.

As play resumed minutes later and Mason in control of the ball, Patriot freshman defender Jessica Paris (Clifton, Va.) lifted a crossing pass from the left side of the field into the box and Wilkinson sent into the net off the header. The score would remain 1-0 heading into halftime.

Miami, which out shot Mason 7-4 in the first half, came out even more aggressively in the second period, out shooting the Patriots 8-2 in the final 45 minutes. The Canes had several near opportunities in front of the goal early, but couldn't convert.

Mason added an insurance goal late in the period from junior midfielder Danielle MacDonald (Burke, Va.), who connected at 84:21 from right side at 25 yards out into the upper left corner of the goal, beating the outstretched hands of the Hurricane's freshman keeper, Lauren McAdam. The Patriots limited Miami's chances in the end, resulting in the 2-0 final.

Mason goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin (Hawthorne, N.Y.) made several great saves, including a point blank one-on-one stop in the 78th minute. She finished with six saves overall. McAdam stopped two shots for the Canes. Miami out shot Mason 15-6 for the game.

George Mason hosts Mid-Atlantic regional foe Navy Sunday at 1 p.m.
