Women's Hoops Claim Second-Straight Victory

Fairfax, VA-Sophomore Jen Daniels (Brigantine, NJ) and junior Lauren Hediger (Pittsburgh, PA) came off the bench to score a combined eight 3-pointers to help lead George Mason University's women's basketball team (13-7, 8-5 CAA) to a 70-43 win over William & Mary (8-14, 4-9) Sunday afternoon at the Patriot Center.

Ten Patriots, out of 12, scored at least one basket and Hediger led the way with a career-high 17 points (5-of-8), including a personal best four treys. Daniels poured in a career-best four 3-pointers and amassed 12 points after shooting 4-of-7 on the afternoon. Junior center Julie Flanders (Virgin Islands) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, while senior forward Vernessa Neamo (Forestville, MD) dished out a team-best four assists.

Forward Kyra Kaylor registered a double-double for the Tribe with a team-high 13 boards and a team second-best 10 points. Forward Maria Sazonova poured in a game-high 18 points for the College after shooting 7-of-13 from the field and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.

William & Mary opened up the game on a 4-0 run and had its largest lead of four at the 15:41 mark after a jumper by Sazonova to put the score at 10-6. The Patriots would answer with a 23-4 run which was capped off with one of Daniels' treys with just under five minutes remaining in the first half to have the scoreboard read, 29-14. Mason went into the break ahead, 37-18.

The Patriots maintained control in the second stanza as they led by at least 20 points almost the entire half. Mason's largest lead of 30 happened after a made layup by Neamo with about eight minutes remaining and the final field goal of the contest happened at 2:08 by the Tribe's Sazonova, which made the final score 70-43.

Mason shot 22-of-55 from the field, 48 percent from long range and 74 percent from the line, while William & Mary shot 30 percent on the afternoon and 58 percent from the charity stripe. The Tribe was unable to convert any of its 13 attempts from beyond the arc, but the College did outrebound the Patriots, 41-40.

The Patriots will return to action on Feb. 20 when they host James Madison at the Patriot Center with tip-off at 7 p.m.
