WASHINGTON, D.C. - The George Mason Patriots (2-3) hit 16 straight free
throws, including eight straight down the stretch to hold on for a 70-62
win over the Georgetown University women's basketball team (2-4). Hoya
freshman Kieraah Marlow led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Varda Tamoulianis recorded her second
double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Patriots showcased a balanced offensive attack with four players
scoring in double figures. Keyhana Wakefield led the team with 16
points, and Jen Daniels followed with 15. Lauren Hediger and Moni
Akintunde had 14 and 13 points respectively. By contrast, Marlow and
Tamoulianis scored just under two thirds of the Hoyas points.
The Hoyas started the game shooting well and playing good defense,
commanding a lead as large as twelve points early in the first half.
When the Hoyas lost their hot hand, the Patriots took advantage with a
barrage of long bombs. George Mason finished the half with seven three
pointers and a five point lead.
The Hoyas defended the three point line more effectively in the second
half, and fought back to regain the lead with four and a half minutes
left in the game. The Patriots, fueled by five straight points by
Daniels, regained a four-point lead with two minutes to play. The Hoyas
were unable to score and turned to fouling, at which point Daniels and
Wakefield hit four of four free throws each to seal the victory.
