George Mason tips-off the 2004-05 men's basketball season in the Memphis, Tenn. regional of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. The Patriots are slated to play IPFW Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and could play nationally-ranked Memphis on its home court on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
This is the first-ever meeting for the Patriots against the Mastadons of IPFW. In fact, George Mason has never faced Savannah State or Memphis either, and one of these teams will play the Patriots Saturday.
George Mason is coming off a stellar 23-10 overall record in 2003-04 and two wins in the National Invitation Tournament. IPFW posted a 3-25 mark last year as an independent. Memphis returns four starters from last year's 22-8 team that finished the season ranked 24th in the Associated Press poll. The Tigers are listed 24th and 23rd in the preseason AP and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls, respectively. Savannah State, another independent, went 5-23 in 2003-04.
