Volleyball Downs Hofstra, Keeps Hope Alive for Postseason Berth

Patriots Fall To Towson 3-0 in CAA Tournament.

Top-seeded Towson and third-seeded Delaware advanced to the championship match with semifinal sweeps at the 2004 CAA Volleyball Championship being held on the campus of Towson University on Saturday. The Tigers and Blue Hens will meet in tomorrow's championship at 5 p.m. with the winner earning the CAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

In Saturday's first semifinal, Towson senior middle blocker Liz Goubeaux, the 2004 CAA Player of the Year, recorded a match-high 14 kills to lead Towson (23-7) to a three-game sweep over fourth-seeded George Mason (14-10).

Towson defeated the Patriots by scores of 30-19, 30-28, and 30-26. With the victory, the Tigers extended their win streak to nine straight matches. George Mason had won the previous two CAA Championships.

Goubeaux was one of two Tigers to reach double figures in kills. Senior Sarah Miller registered 12 kills with seven digs in helping the Tigers to its first CAA championship match.

Senior setter Mary Clare Coghlan, who was named the CAA Co-Setter of the Year on Friday, recorded 33 assists for the Tigers to go with six digs.

Junior outside hitter April Hoffman recorded her 1,000th career kill in the third game of the match. With five kills in the match, she now has 1,001 in her three-year career.

Natalia Porosa led the Patriots in the loss with 11 kills, while CAA Co-Setter of the Year Jesica Umansky recorded 32 assists and five digs, including the 1,000th of her college career.

In the second semifinal, Delaware (23-8) topped second-seeded Hofstra (19-10) 30-21, 30-25, 31-29. Sarah Engle led the Blue Hens with 17 kills while Allison Lutz posted 45 assists. Claire McCormack added 10 kills and 12 digs.

Delaware was down 25-20 in the third game but closed the match out with an 11-4 win to advance to the championship. Tessa Spar led the Pride with 10 kills while Shellane Ogoshi, the CAA Rookie of the Year, tallied 36 assists and 17 digs.
