The William and Mary volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak tonight as it swept its CAA rival George Mason 3-0 this evening at William and Mary Hall. Game scores were 30-23, 30-26 and 33-31. W&M improves to 10-7, 2-2 in the CAA, while the Patriots fall to 7-5, 2-2 in the CAA.
Tribe junior outside hitter Kate Woffindin (Allentown, PA) led the Tribe offense with 11 kills, while classmate Mandy Mayo (Charlottesville, VA) added nine as the Tribe hit .183 for the match (45 kills, 22 errors on 126 total attacks) and held the Patriots to a .115 attack (44 kills, 30 errors, 122 total attacks). George Mason was led by freshman Jacqueline Kohler, who led all players with 18 kills and Niki Bernardes added 11.
The Tribe took game one behind a strong offensive effort, hitting .267, posting 11 kills with just three errors on 30 total attacks. The Patriots offense was ineffective in the opening game, as it tallied 14 kills but logged 13 errors on 37 total attacks.
W&M kept the momentum going in game two, winning 30-26 as it hit .227 for the game, recording 17 kills to just 14 for the Patriots, which hit .171 for the game.
The third and deciding game was the best of the match. W&M grabbed a big lead late, only to have the Patriots tie the match at 29 after being down 28-25. After a pair of kills by Mayo gave the Tribe a 32-31 lead, an Patriots attack error ended the match. The Patriots out-hit the Tribe in the third game, recording an even .100 team attack (16 kills, 11 errors on 50 total attacks) while the Tribe finished with a .094 attack (17 kills, 12 errors on 53 total attacks).
Tribe senior setter Amy Owens (St. Louis, MO) posted 34 assists and seven digs, while Mayo also recorded seven digs. Libero Erin Simmons (San Jose, CA) led the Tribe with nine digs.
For the Patriots, Jesica Umansky posted 33 assists and nine digs, and libero Zulma Rojas led all players with 16 digs. Natalia Porosa added six kills and 10 digs as the Patriots recorded 52 digs to just 40 for the Tribe. Each team recorded three total blocks on the evening.
The Patriots visit UNC Wilmington tomorrow night at 7:00.
