FAIRFAX, Va. -- George Mason scored two goals in the first half en route to a 2-0 women's soccer shut out of visiting Colonial Athletic Association foe Towson Thursday evening at George Mason Stadium.

The Patriots (9-6-3, 4-2-2 CAA), who have won three straight league games and remain unbeaten in their last six contests at 4-0-2, inch closer to their 10th straight CAA playoff appearance. The Tigers (6-10-1, 2-5-1 CAA), meanwhile, have dropped five consecutive matches.

Freshman forward Sarah Fack (Algonquin, Ill.) tallied Mason's first goal at 4:11 off an assist from sophomore midfielder L.J. Williams (Fairfax Station, Va.). Williams fed a through ball down the center of the field, which Fack recovered. She beat her defender, and sent a shot from 20 yards out past Towson freshman goalkeeper Brandi Daniels (Huntington, N.Y.) to the right side, putting the Patriots ahead, 1-0.

The game would remain scoreless until Mason junior midfielder Amy Sorenson (Albuquerque, N.M.) netted a surprising insurance goal in the 44th minute, giving the Patriots a 2-0 lead. Sorenson's shot was a leisurely lofted ball towards the goal from about 25 yards that inexplicably went through Daniels' hands and between her legs into the net. Mason held the 2-0 advantage into halftime and for the rest of the match.

Mason defenders Kristin Portell (Jr.; Woodbridge, Va.), Allison Cowan (Sr.; Shorewood, Minn.), Jessica Paris (Fr.; Clifton, Va.) and Amanda Schmidt (So.; Princeton Junction, N.J.) limited Towson to just four shots, while the Patriots' offense managed 15 on the night. Both teams were fairly even in corner kicks as Mason held a slight advantage, 7-6.

Daniels recorded one save and allowed two goals in 45 minutes for the Tigers, while reserve keeper Kathy Weglein (Jr.; Manchester, Md.) made four saves and did not allow a goal in the second half. Mason senior goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin (Hawthorne, N.Y.) registered her third solo shut out of the season and collected two saves.

George Mason is currently tied for fourth-place in the conference standings with 14 points. Mason needs a win or a tie at home Saturday against Delaware at 7 p.m. to guarantee itself a playoff bid. Towson heads to James Madison on Saturday.
