The George Mason women's volleyball team needed a win badly on Friday night when it hosted UNC Wilmington and the Patriots got what they coveted, defeating the Seahawks, 30-25, 30-32, 30-18, 30-23.
Senior setter Jesica Umansky had a big game for the Patriots, with 52 assists, nine digs and five service aces, including three straight aces at one point in the second set with the Patriots trailing 29-27. That gave the Patriots (9-7, 4-4) a chance to steal the second game but they ultimately came up short. It was the only time all night that they couldn't slam the door on UNC Wilmington.
The Seahawks (2-16, 0-8) hit just .088 in the match, but that total was inflated by a .242 hitting percentage in the second game. The Patriots, meanwhile, hit .209 in the match, cooling off after hitting .371 in the first game.
Junior outside hitter Natalia Porosa led all players with 19 kills and junior libero Zulma Rojas added a game-high 15 digs. Porosa also had nine digs in the match. Junior outside hitter Niki Bernardes had 10 kills, four service aces and six block assists, along with a solo block. Senior Marie Skelton had nine kills and just two errors on 17 attacks for a .412 hitting percentage.
Lindsay Moffitt of led UNC Wilmington with 16 kills and she hit .167 in the match. Kate Bennett, who leads all CAA freshmen in kills per game and digs per game had just eight of each. Lacey White of Centreville, Va. had a team-high 35 assists for the Seahawks, who have now lost 14 straight.
The Patriots are back in action on Saturday when they host William & Mary at 7 p.m. The Seahawks travel to Towson for a match on Saturday at 5 p.m.
