The George Mason women's volleyball team fell behind early against James Madison on Saturday night, but the Patriots didn't stay down, as they fought and clawed their way back into the match, eventually taking a 21-30, 30-24, 30-28, 30-25 win over the Dukes at John Linn Memorial Gymnasium at Fairfax, Va.
The Patriots were once again without junior outside hitter Natalia Porosa (sore knee), who led the team in kills and kills per game heading into the weekend. Once again, the players on the court rose to the challenge. Jaqueline Kohler had a match-high 23 kills on 58 attacks, Niki Bernardes had 15 kills and a .265 hitting percentage, and Chantal Bodkin-Clarke had 10 kills and a .348 hitting percentage as the Patriots improved to 7-4 on the year, 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association action.
James Madison had entered the weekend on a seven-game winning streak but the Dukes have now dropped two in a row, falling to Towson on Friday and the Patriots on Saturday. Emilee Hussack's team-high 16 kills and Kate Fuchs' 12 kills and .391 hitting percentage weren't enough to make up for a team hitting percentage of .140. The Dukes hit just .076 after the first game. They are now 11-4, 1-2 on the year.
Mason's Jesica Umansky had a stellar match with 48 assists and 13 digs. She consistently found the right player on the attack and she had several strong plays at the net on defense as well. Zulma Rojas added a match-high 23 digs and she committed errors on just two of her 40 service receptions.
Krysta Cannon had 40 assists for the Dukes and Nora Quish paced the team with 19 digs. Jena Pierson added 12 digs and Hussack had 11. The Patriots had 10 total blocks while James Madison had eight. The Patriots also led in service aces, 7-5, and digs, 67-62.
Mason returns to action on Friday at William & Mary at 7 p.m. James Madison takes the court next on Friday when it hosts Hofstra at 8 p.m.
