PHILADELPHIA - George Mason battled Colonial Athletic Association foe Drexel to a scoreless 0-0 tie in women's collegiate soccer action Sunday afternoon at Drexel's Vidas Field. The Patriots move to 6-6-3 overall (1-2-2 CAA), while the Dragons go to 4-9-4 on the season (0-4-2 CAA).
George Mason is unbeaten in its last three contests, which have all gone into overtime. It is the fifth OT game of the season for the Patriots who are 2-0-3 in those contests. Overall, Mason hasn't lost in its last 17 extra-period games (8-0-9), dating back to Oct. 19, 2001.
Drexel junior Katie Kane had two quality chances in the second overtime, but could not convert on either opportunity. Just after the start of the second extra frame, a wide-open Kane received a pass from junior Casey Miller in front of the goal. Mason senior goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin (Hawthorne, N.Y.) dove for the ball and Kane managed to boot it past her, but the kick curled wide.
Minutes later, Kane nearly struck again when she drove in on goal and rocketed a shot that clanged off the crossbar and nearly into the net. The Patriots managed to clear the ball to preserve the tie.
Mason also had several near misses in the contest, as the team out shot the Dragons, 22-12. Freshman defender Jessica Paris (Clifton, Va.) and junior midfielder Amy Sorenson (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the Patriots with four shots each.
Coughlin was superb in the net for Mason, stopping nine shots. Drexel sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Stuhler finished with 10 saves. The Patriots owned a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
George Mason closes out its season with a four-game home stand that begins Friday, at 7 p.m. against UNC Wilmington. Following Friday's contest against the Seahawks, the Patriots take on league-leading Virginia Commonwealth Sunday at 1 p.m.
