FAIRFAX, VA ... James Madison scored twice in the second half to defeat Georgia Southern, 2-0, while George Mason scored in the second half before allowing a late "own goal" as it tied with Appalachian State, 1-1 in overtime, in the first round of the George Mason/Comfort Inn Soccer Classic Friday at George Mason Stadium.
James Madison improved to 3-0 with its victory, while George Mason remained unbeaten at 2-0-1. Appalachian State is 0-1-1 and Georgia Southern dropped to 0-3.
In the second game of the evening, George Mason dominated offensively as it outshot Appalachian State, 24-9, but the Patriots managed to put just one shot past Mountaineers junior goalkeeper Philip Cavicchia, who recorded 10 saves. Mason's lone goal came at 71:03 as junior Karim Manneh headed a ball back to sophomore Neema Doroudian, who drilled a 20-yard shot past Cavicchia.
The Patriots had an opportunity to make the score 2-0 in the 74th minute after an Appalachian State player was called for taking down Manneh in the penalty area. Sophomore Steve Alabi's penalty kick, however, was stopped by Cavicchia as he dove to his left and pushed the ball outside the post.
The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard for the first time this season (they lost to Georgia State, 3-0, in their season opener) at 84:54 by benefit of a Patriot "own goal." Appalachian State senior Fredrick Henriksen sent a low cross from the left side into the penalty area, but a George Mason player sliding to block the ball deflected it into the net to tie the score. Neither team would score in the two overtime periods, leaving the game a draw. Junior goalkeeper John O'Hara had four saves for the Patriots.
In the first game, James Madison broke the ice as junior Denny Fulk coverted off a cross from freshman Kurt Morsink at 58:12 for a 1-0 lead. The Dukes scored again at 71:22 as freshman Mark Totten sent a cross from the right side and sophomore Danny Sheridan headed the ball into the net from eight yards out.
Georgia Southern senior goalkeeper Kirk Latibeaudiere had nine saves for the Eagles, while Dukes freshman Kevin Trapp made five saves in posting his third straight shutout.
The tournament continues Sunday as James Madison faces Appalachian State at 12 p.m. before George Mason hosts Georgia Southern at 2:30 p.m.
