FAIRFAX, VA ... George Mason dominated much of the contest offensively, but the Patriots were only able to score once as they played to a 1-1 tie in double overtime with visiting Old Dominion in a Colonial Athletic Association women's college soccer game Sunday at George Mason Stadium.
George Mason saw its record go to 4-2-3 overall and to 1-0-1 in the CAA, while Old Dominion recorded its third draw in its last four games as its record went to 1-3-3 overall, 0-1-1 in the CAA. The Patriots are 3-0-3 in overtime this season and are unbeaten (7-0-2) in their last nine contests that have gone to "extra time."
Old Dominion took advantage of a defensive lapse early in the contest to score its lone goal of the game as junior Ashley Kramer took the ball from a Patriot defender and drove on the George Mason goal. Kramer's shot was stopped by a defender, but the ball caromed up and hit the Mason player on the arm, awarding the Lady Monarchs a penalty kick. Sophomore Laura Beeman converted the penalty kick at 1:15 for her fifth goal of the season.
George Mason slowly gained control of the midfield and pressured the Old Dominion defense for the latter part of the first half, but could not score. The Patriots maintained the momentum in the second half and broke through at 49:31 as sophomore Amy Alecci took a cross from freshman Jaime Daulton and sent an eight-yard shot across the mouth of the goal and inside the left post for her fourth goal of the year.
Mason would maintain the pressure, outshooting the Lady Monarchs 13-1 in the second half, but could not get the go-ahead score. Alecci had a shot go off the crossbar in the 85th minute, with a shot off the ensuing rebound by junior Dianna Russini just clearing the bar. Patriot junior Sarah Wilkinson also had a shot go off the crossbar in the 94th minute during the first overtime period as Mason held a 22-5 advantage in shots for the game.
Junior goalkeeper Stephanie Miller had eight saves for the Lady Monarchs, while junior Sarah Coughlin recorded one save for the Patriots.
George Mason concludes its six-game homestand as it hosts Pennsylvania Wednesday at 4 p.m. The contest was rescheduled from a postponement on Sept. 19 due to Hurricane Isabel.
