FAIRFAX, VA ... American sophomore Gordon Templeman scored twice and junior Peter Philipakos had a goal and an assist to lead the Eagles to a 3-1 victory over host George Mason in a non-conference men's college soccer game Saturday.

American won its second straight game to improve to 3-3-1, while George Mason dropped its second straight contest as it fell to 4-2-1.

Philipakos started the play that led to American's first goal as he sent a corner kick out top to Templeman, who settled the ball and drilled a 28-yard shot into the upper part of the net at 32:38 for his first goal of the season. George Mason responded, however, by stepping up its offensive pressure and scored the equalizer as sophomore Steve Alabi took passes from juniors Karim Manneh and Matt Mendy and put his seventh goal into the back of the net at 42:48.

The Eagles regained the lead at 53:37 as Templeman scored his second goal of the day off an assist by freshman Salvatore Caccavale. American clinched the victory as Philipakos scored his fourth goal of the year after taking a pass from freshman Jonathan Barbarin at 86:20.

Junior goalkeeper Thomas Myers had six saves for the Eagles, while junior John O'Hara made three saves for the Patriots. Each team recorded 12 shots.

George Mason travels to Maryland (ranked first in the nation by the NSCAA, Soccer America and SoccerTimes.com this week) Wednesday to meet the Terrapins at 7 p.m.
