FAIRFAX, VA ... George Mason held off a determined North Carolina State team to gain a 1-1 tie in double overtime and Delaware defeated Boston University, 2-1, in the second and final round of the women's soccer George Mason/Kappa Invitational Sunday at George Mason Stadium.
George Mason saw its record go to 3-1-2 with the draw, while North Carolina State is 4-1-1. Delaware improved to 3-2-1 with the victory and Boston University fell to 1-3-1.
In the second game of the afternoon, North Carolina State held the offensive advantage all day and outshot George Mason, 26-5. But the Patriots were the first on the scoreboard as sophomore Amy Alecci took a pass from junior Allison Cowan and drilled a 12-yard shot into the net for her third goal of the season at 42:59, giving Mason a 1-0 lead at intermission.
The Wolfpack, however, retaliated quickly in the second half as junior Anna Helenius scored her first goal of the season 26 seconds into the period. Helenius took a back pass from junior Erin Griswold and sent a 20-yard shot inside the right post to tie the score at 1-1.
N.C. State narrowly missed taking the lead several minutes later when a Griswold shot caromed off the crossbar, but after that, the George Mason defense held the Wolfpack at bay. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin tied her career high with 15 saves for the Patriots, including 10 in the second half alone, while Wolfpack freshman Megan Connors had one save on the day.
Boston University gained the upper hand early in the first game of the day as sophomore Brooke Bingham scored her first goal of the year on a penalty kick at 1:16 after Terrier junior Lauren Ciccone was fouled in the penalty area. But Delaware responded with two goals to take a 2-1 lead by intermission. Junior Ginette Buffone scored her first goal of the season at 15:46 off a cross by senior Caryn Blood, then senior Maria Pollaro scored her first goal of the year off assists from Blood and junior Christine Wrightson at 21:08.
No one could find the back of the net in the second half as the Fightin' Blue Hens held a 13-12 advantage in shots for the game. Delaware sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Shover had seven saves, while BU senior Jessica Clinton had six saves.
George Mason continues a six-game homestand this weekend as it hosts Pennsylvania Friday at 7 p.m. and Arkansas Sunday at 11 a.m.
