FAIRFAX, VA ... The George Mason University men's volleyball team has five players ranked in five statistical categories in the latest NCAA Division I-II statistics released today.
Senior James Claney (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) holds onto second in the nation in blocking average for the third consecutive week. Averaging 1.65 blocks per game, he has been ranked in the nation's top 10 since national statistics were released five weeks ago. Claney leads the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association in this category and is also ranked 14th in hitting percentage at .358.
Junior Brad Kniewel (Ringwood, NJ/Lakeland Regional) falls one spot to come in at 10th nationally and fifth in the conference in dig average with 2.38 digs per game. Kniewel made his first start at outside hitter in the Patriots' 3-0 loss to Princeton on Tuesday, but still recorded a match-high six digs.
Sophomore Shaun Powell (Toronto, Canada/Francis Libermann) re-enters the national statistics at 17th in points average, his highest ranking of the season. Averaging 4.79 points per game, Powell leads the Patriots in kill average with 3.83 per game to rank 15th in the EIVA.
Freshman Matt Steinfurth (Portsmouth, VA/Woodrow Wilson) stays at 20th this week in blocking average with 1.16 blocks per game. He also makes his first appearance among the national leaders in hitting percentage, ranked 20th with a .399 mark. He is also ranked in both categories within the conference, at sixth in hitting percentage and 10th in blocking average.
Sophomore Felix Campos (Puerto Nuevo, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Antonio) remains 20th in ace average for the second straight week with 0.33 aces per game. In the EIVA he is sixth in ace average and 19th in kills per game with 3.27.
Sophomore Dave Egan (Toronto, Canada/Senator O'Connor) falls out of the national rankings for the first time in four weeks, but remains among the conference leaders. In the EIVA he is fourth in assists average (12.55), 12th in blocking average (1.13) and tied for 18th in aces per game (0.27).
The George Mason men's volleyball team (10-8, 8-2 EIVA Tait), who received three votes in the latest USA Today/American Volleyball Coaches Association Coaches Top-15 Poll, will host two conference matches in the John Linn Memorial Gym this weekend. They face St. Francis (6-13, 1-9 EIVA Tait) on Friday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. and Concordia (7-12, 4-4 EIVA Tait) on Sunday, March 23, at 2 p.m.
