HARRISONBURG, Va. - Senior guard Shanna Price recorded her third double-double in four games to spark James Madison (6-4, 11-8) to a 68-58 win over George Mason (5-5, 8-9)
in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Thursday night at the
JMU Convocation Center.
Price finished with a team-high 18 points and a game- and season-high 13
rebounds as she led the Dukes to their ninth straight home victory.
The win offset a 24-point performance by George Mason junior guard Jen Derevjanik, who scored her 1,000th career point. She is the 12th player in school history to
surpass that milestone.
Derevjanik scored her 1,000th point on a three-pointer with 7:12 to go in
the first half, putting the Patriots ahead 17-15. A layup by freshman
guard Jen Daniels at 6:04 gave George Mason
its largest lead of the game at 19-15.
With George Mason still leading by four at 22-18 with 4:28 to go, JMU
closed the half with a 9-0 scoring run to go up 28-22 at the break.
JMU led by as many as nine points (the last time 40-31 at 12:24) in the
second half before the Patriots went on a 9-0 run of their own. Junior
forward Khalilah Smith capped the run
when she connected on both ends of a 1+1 free throw at 8:54, tying the game
at 40.
JMU inched ahead 43-42, and Price came up with a steal but was fouled hard
by junior guard Susan Otim as she drove for a layup.
An intentional foul was called, and red-shirt senior guard Jody LeRose stepped in for a shaken Price and hit both free throws with 7:40 on the clock. With JMU then awarded the
subsequent possession, red-shirt sophomore guard Mary Beth Culbertson fed Brooks for a layup at 7:25 to push
the Dukes' lead to five, 47-42.
The Patriots twice cut the lead to two (the last time 52-50 at 4:31) but
another 9-0 JMU scoring run put the Dukes up 61-50 with 2:15 left. Mason
would not get closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Price was one of four Dukes in double figures. Cichowicz scored 13 points
and tied her season-high with 12 assists, Brooks added 11 points and LeRose
scored 10 points.
Derevjanik was the only George Mason player in double figures, and Vernessa Neamo led the Patriots with 10 rebounds.
