Campos, Patriots Sweep Scarlet Raiders in EIVA Showdown

NEWARK, NJ ... Sophomore Felix Campos (Puerto Nuevo, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Antonio) registered 19 kills to help George Mason to a 3-0 (30-28, 30-28, 30-28) sweep of EIVA Tait opponent Rutgers-Newark in the Golden Dome.

Senior Danko Iordanov (Varna, Bulgaria) had 17 kills and posted his 1,000th career kill in game one for the Scarlet Raiders, but the Patriots ruled the night, running their league mark to 5-0 while improving to 7-6 overall. Rutgers-Newark suffered their first conference loss, falling to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the EIVA Tait division.

Sophomore Dave Egan (Toronto, Canada/Senator O'Connor) had 54 assists and a pair of service aces for the Patriots who also got 11 kills from senior James Claney (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) and 10 kills and five blocks from senior outside hitter Art Kulans (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South).

Freshman Brian Honsberger (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster Central) matched Campos with 19 kills for the Scarlet Raiders and sophomore Aleks Ondelj (Orlando, FL/Oak Ridge) had 15 assists and eight digs for Rutgers-Newark.

In a tight battle, the Scarlet Raiders outhit the Patriots, .400 to .386, but Claney hit .625 (11 kills, one error, 16 attacks) and freshman Matt Steinfurth (Portsmouth, VA/Woodrow Wilson) hit .583 (seven kills, no errors, 12 attacks).

In game one, Campos chalked up a kill and then served an ace to break a 28-28 tie and claim the game for GMU. In game two, Campos posted the final four points of the game for the Patriots on kills, breaking a 26-26 tie. In game three, Campos broke a 27-all tie with a kill before George Mason won on a pair of Raider attacker errors wrapped around a kill by Iordanov.

The Patriots look to keep their undefeated conference record alive at Princeton on Saturday, February 22, at 2 p.m.
