Bronx, NY-George Mason University women's basketball team (3-2) was defeated by a score of 66-60 to Fordham University (5-3) Monday evening at the Rose Hill Gym in Bronx, NY. The win marks Fordham Head Coach Jim Lewis' first win over George Mason, where he coached for 14 seasons.
In the first half, George Mason came out scoring as they opened an early
12-1 lead on Fordham at the 15:16 mark, following a Jen Derevjanik
three-pointer. After George Mason extended their lead to 18-9, Fordham went
on a 9-2 run to close to with in three after a jump hook shot from Jada
Jefferson. Fordham then tied the game at 28 after Beth Ann Dickinson hit
back-to-back three-pointers with 2:37 remaining. Stacey Price then scored
the final five points for Fordham to close the half up one, 33-32. At the
half, George Mason's Laura Kooij led all scorers with 13 points, while Beth
Ann Dickinson had nine points to lead Fordham.
In the second half, the teams were even at 42 with 14:40 left in the game.
Fordham then went on another 9-2 run to take a seven-point lead after a
Monica Mack (Cincinnati, OH) jumper. The Rams would push the lead to as many
as eight points, before George Mason cut the lead back to one with 3:32
remaining. Mack then hit a three-pointer to push the lead back to four with
1:30 left. The Rams then hit four of their final five free throws to close
out the game and win by a six-point margin.
For Fordham, senior Beth Ann Dickinson scored a team-high 16 points to go
with four assists, while junior Stacey Price recorded her second
double-double of the year with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Jada
Jefferson had a career night, having career-bests with 11 points and eight
rebounds.
For George Mason, Jen Derevjanik and Laura Kooij each had 20 points to lead
the Patriots.
