FAIRFAX, VA ... Junior Matt Mendy scored in the 51st minute and the George Mason defense posted its 10th shutout of the season as the Patriots celebrated "Senior Day" with a 1-0 victory over nationally ranked Old Dominion in a Colonial Athletic Association men's college soccer game Sunday at George Mason Stadium.

George Mason improved to 10-4-5 overall and to 4-1-3 in the CAA with the victory, snapping a four-game losing streak against Old Dominion (ranked second in the nation by Soccer America, third by SoccerTimes.com and College Soccer News and fourth by the NSCAA this week). The Patriots are 6-1-4 over their last 11 games and have allowed just five goals in that span, and the victory was their first over a nationally ranked team this season, improving to 1-3-1.

Old Dominion suffered its first loss by shutout as the Monarchs dropped their second straight game to fall to 14-2 overall, 6-2 in the CAA.

Mendy's third goal of the season came after a scramble in front of the Old Dominion goal. A long throw-in from the right side by Patriot senior Keith Nakai was cleared out of the penalty area by the Monarchs defense, but senior Mirza Kurspahic chipped the ball back into the area to Mendy, who headed a 10-yard shot inside the right post at 50:42.

Old Dominion turned up the pressure over the last 20 minutes of play and had several scoring opportunities, including a blistering 20-yard shot by senior Attila Vendegh that was saved by Patriot junior goalkeeper John O'Hara in the 75th minute. Kurspahic also cleared a 35-yard shot by senior Josh Hill with less than five minutes to play.

O'Hara had four saves in posting his ninth full shutout and third in a row, while Monarchs senior Sam Cameron had two saves as ODU held a 13-7 advantage in shots.

George Mason plays its final game of the regular season Friday as it travels to CAA rival James Madison to meet the Dukes at 7 p.m.
