WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary had four players record double figures in kills, and survived a 40-kill effort from George Mason outside hitter Aline Pereira to defeat the Patriots in exciting 3-2 fashion tonight in college volleyball action at William and Mary Hall. Game scores were 30-15, 30-28, 28-30, 20-30 and 15-11. The Tribe improves to 9-13 overall and 3-6 in the CAA, while the Patriots fall to 10-11, 6-3.
The College had four players reach double figures in kills, led by Megan Eisenman's (Eden Prairie, MN) 17. Eisenman had only three errors on 27 total attacks for a .519 hitting percentage which led all players. Mandy Mayo (Charlottesville, VA) added 16, while Kate Woffindin (Allentown, PA) added 15 and Sarah Long (West Hollbrook, NY) finished with 11. The Tribe outhit the Patriots .247 to .166, and dominated the net, as it finished with 15 total blocks to Mason's seven.
The Tribe dominated the first game, as it held Mason to a -0.70 (eight kills, 11 errors, 43 total attacks) hitting percentage while racking up a .400 average (17 kills, three errors on 35 total attacks) of its own. Woffindin and Long each had four kills in the first game, while Kathleen Hawley (Rolling Hills Estates, CA), who finished with 22 digs, recorded nine in the first game alone.
The second game was much like the first, as the Tribe controlled the action, finishing the stanza with a .214 attack, as Eisenman knocked down five of the Tribe's 15 kills in the game. Pereira had five of the Patriots 19 kills, but the Tribe halted a late Mason rally to take a two game lead.
In the third game, the Tribe held an early lead, but the Patriots dominated late and took over. Mason registered a .400 hitting percentage, recording 20 kills and only four errors on 40 total attacks, while the Tribe hit .362, knocking down 21 kills with only four errors on 47 total attacks. Pereira recorded 13 kills with only one error, while Eisenman finished with seven to pace the Tribe.
Down 2-1, the Patriots dominated the fourth game, winning 30-20. Pereira finished with eight of the Patriots 13 kills, while the College's offense recorded more errors (11) than kills (eight) as the Patriots forced a fifth and deciding game.
The fifth game was a back-and-forth affair. Mason raced out to a 5-3 lead on a Pereira kill, but Long and Mayo answered with kills to give the Tribe the lead at 6-5. Pereira added another kill to tie the game at six, but that was as close as the Patriots would get the rest of the night. A Geraghty service ace sandwiched around two attack errors by Pereira gave the Tribe a 9-6 lead, and a Woffindin kill stretched the lead to 10-7. After a Patriots rally cut the College's lead to 13-11, Geraghty stretched it to 14-11, and the Tribe finished off the win with block assists from Geraghty and Mayo on an attack by Pereira to seal the 3-2 win.
