WILMINGTON, N.C. - George Mason sophomore Natalie Porosa held game-high honors with 16 kills and a .351 hitting average as the Patriots cruised to a three-game win over UNC Wilmington Friday in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action at Hanover Hall with scores of 30-17, 30-21 and 32-30.
George Mason, winners of its last five conference tilts, improves to 10-10 overall and 6-2 in the CAA. The Seahawks, meanwhile, loses its fifth-straight and dips to 5-15 and 1-7.
The Patriots hit .258 on the match as senior outside hitter Aline Pereira and sophomore opposite hitter Niki Bernardes added eight and seven kills, respectively. Defensively, GMU controlled the match totaling 59 digs with four Patriots reaching double digits in digs. Bernardes led the way with 14 digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Felicity Ribalkin led UNCW with nine kills. Senior setter Bea Gerevich added 11 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Lynn Hartough had a career-high 11 digs for the Seahawks.
Mason took control of game one with a 13-1 run to take a 16-4 lead on its way to a 30-17 final. In game two, the Patriots scored eight of the final 10 points of a 30-21 win. In the finale, the Seahawks trailed late, 29-26, but scored four of the next five points to tie game at 30-all. Mason completed the sweep on a pair of UNCW hitting errors.
The Patriots will return to action on Oct. 25 when they square-off against William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA at 7 p.m.
