FAIRFAX, VA ... Maryland scored once in each half to defeat George Mason, 2-0, in a non-conference women's college soccer game Wednesday at George Mason Stadium.

Maryland snapped a two-game losing streak as it improved to 8-6-1, while George Mason saw its losing streak reach three games as it fell to 7-5-3.

The Terrapin offense came out strong and had seven shots in the first 15 minutes of action. Maryland got on the scoreboard at 6:20 as sophomore Kimmy Francis sent a corner kick from the left side to senior Audra Poulin, who touched the ball inside to freshman Ashly Kennedy, who tapped the ball into the net amid a scramble for her first career goal.

The Patriots recovered after that initial Maryland flurry and began to gain on the offensive end as the second half progressed. In the 71st minute, sophomore Amy Alecci nearly tied the game as her 18-yard shot across the goalmouth went off the left post, but the Terrapins counterattacked and scored their second goal moments later. Francis sent another corner kick toward the top of the goal box, where senior Jen Biscoe headed it into the right side of the net for her third goal of the season at 71:37.

Mason junior goalkeeper Sarah Coughlin had a solid game, making eight saves, while senior Kristen Barnhill had two saves in posting her third shutout for Maryland. The Terrapins had a 14-6 advantage in shots for the night.

George Mason returns to Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend as it travels to Delaware Friday at 7 p.m. and to Towson Sunday at 1 p.m.
