FAIRFAX, VA--Senior outside hitter Aline Pereira (Sao Paolo, Brazil) broke George Mason University's all-time career kill record with her seventh of the night and nailed a career second-best 37 kills to help lead the Patriots (9-9, 5-2) to a five-game victory in women's volleyball action over Hofstra (8-13, 4-3) at the John Linn Gymnasium Saturday evening (25-30, 25-30, 30-21, 30-28, 15-12). Pereira, who now has 2,139 career kills, moved past Andrea Smith who registered 2,108 kills during her career from 1989-93.
Freshman middle blocker Janelle Wilson (Towanda, KS) drilled a career-high 19 kills from 30 total attacks and four errors to hit .500 on the night. Junior setter Jesica Umansky (Buenos Aires, Argentina) paced the offense with a season-high 61 assists, and also added 13 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Zulma Rojas (So.; Bayamon, Puerto Rico) collected a team second-best and a career-high 15 digs, while junior Marie Skelton (Curtin, ACT, Australia) registered a career-high nine kills and matched her career-best with three service aces.
Hofstra was led by junior outside hitter Alessandra Pollo who notched a double-double with 20 kills and 12 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Tessa Sphar had 19 kills for Hofstra. Freshman libero Catherine Durakis tallied a match-best 17 digs for the Pride, while Beth Arnette had a team-high 40 assists.
The Pride came out strong in the first two games, but Mason could not be stopped and hit .400 in game three to Hofstra's .163. The Patriots hit .315 to the Pride's .356 in game four and Mason registered a .231 hitting percentage in the final game, while Hofstra hit only .048. Mason pounded 86 kills off 197 total attacks and 30 errors to garner a .284 hitting percentage in the win, while Hofstra collected 68 kills off of 176 total attacks and 22 errors to hit .261.
The Patriots will return to the court on Oct. 21 when they play George Washington in Washington, DC, with first serve at 7 p.m.
