RICHMOND, Va. ? Junior Jen Parsons had a
goal and two assists as the Virginia Commonwealth women's soccer team scored
three times during the second half to earn a 3-0 victory over Colonial
Athletic Association rival George Mason Saturday evening at Sports Backers
Stadium.
Rams' senior Genevieve Tremblay also scored once and assisted on another goal, while goalkeeper
Chrissy Lloyd set a new VCU career record for
shutouts after the win. The Rams, now 7-4-3 overall, remained unbeaten in
CAA play with a 2-0-3 record through its first five conference matches,
while the Patriots fell to 7-4-3 for the year and are now 2-2-1 in the
league after suffering their second consecutive loss to a CAA opponent.
VCU got on the scoreboard less than four minutes after the start of the
second half when Parsons took in a corner-kick cross off the foot of senior
Prue Cormie and fired a shot on
goal. After GMU netminder Sarah Coughlin turned back the attempt, Parsons
corralled the rebound and sent a pass to the left side of crease, where an
awaiting Tremblay tapped in the feed for a 1-0 lead.
The Rams extended their advantage to two goals when Parsons' baseline
cross was knocked home by sophomore Hedda Gardsjord with 33 minutes left to play. VCU then put the game out
of reach in the 78th minute on Parsons' 10th tally of the season, which
Tremblay set up with a pinpoint pass that split the Patriot defense.
Lloyd stopped five GMU shots to register her school-record 14th shutout,
while Parsons' matched former Rams' standout Christina Kenney's career mark
for points after her four-point total for the night gave her 85 during her
three seasons.
Coughlin finished with five saves for the Patriots, who were outshot
22-13 by VCU for the game.
