TOWSON, MD ... George Mason got a goal late in the first half, but Towson rallied to score late in the second period and held on for a 1-1 tie in double overtime in a Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer game Sunday at Towson Center Field.
George Mason remained unbeaten (3-0-3) in its last six games as it saw its record move to 7-3-4 overall, 2-0-2 in the CAA. The Patriots are 1-0-4 in overtime games this season, with four of those coming in the last five games, and are 14-6-17 in "extra time" over the past nine seasons. Towson played to a tie in its second straight game as it improved to 0-9-3 overall, 0-2-2 in the CAA.
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead late in the first half as junior Matt Mendy scored his second goal of the season on a 10-yard shot off a pass from junior Danny Climo at 37:48. George Mason continued to dominate play through much of the second half, but sophomore goalkeeper Zak Thompson kept the Tigers in the game with his steady goalkeeping as he made 13 saves on the day, including eight in the second half. Mason outshot Towson, 30-8.
Towson finally gained the equalizer with 14:57 left in regulation as sophomore Kyle Coleman took a pass from junior Peter Johnson on a two-on-one break and scored the first goal of his college career to tie the game. It was only Towson's third goal of the season as a team.
The Tigers missed a golden opportunity to win the game late in the first overtime period when junior Shawn Conley got loose on a breakaway. However, Patriot junior goalkeeper John O'Hara charged off his line and made a great save on Conley, preserving the tie.
O'Hara made three saves for the Patriots, while Thompson has had 23 saves in his last two games.
