FAIRFAX, VA... George Mason shot a season-best 52.9 percent from the field and pulled away in the second half to a 74-42 victory over Drexel in a Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball game Thursday night at the Patriot Center.
George Mason won for the third time in its last four games to improve to 6-5 overall, 3-1 in the CAA. Drexel fell to 7-7 overall, 3-2 in the CAA.
Each of George Mason's 14 players got into the contest and all but two scored, and Mason out-rebounded its opponent for just the third time this season, with a 36-29 advantage on the boards.
Mason junior Jen Derevjanik was the only player in double figures, as she led the Patriots with 20 points and five assists. Sophomore Katrina Martin led Drexel with nine points and nine rebounds.
George Mason shot 55.6 percent (15-27) from the field in the first half as they took a 36-24 lead into halftime. Senior Shelbylynn McBride scored four points in a 9-0 Patriot run midway through the half to take a 20-12 lead. Derevjanik had nine points at the break to lead Mason.
Drexel senior Steph Frysinger hit a lay-up to open the second half before the Patriots broke the game open with a 17-0 run to take a 53-26 lead with 11:46 to play. Derevjanik had seven points in the spurt. Senior Courtney Hall's basket with 34 seconds left provided Mason's largest advantage with the 74-42 final score.
George Mason travels to Delaware Sunday at 1 p.m. for its first conference road game of the season.
