FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) - Freshman Jai Lewis was perfect from the field, scoring
17 points on 7-for-7 shooting, to lead George Mason to a 55-54 victory Monday
over Hartford in the schools' first meeting.
Blocked shots in the final 10 seconds by Richard Tynes and Trent Wurtz
preserved the win for the Patriots (5-3).
Junior Amous, who scored 11 points for Hartford (3-5), missed a shot at
giving the Hawks the lead with 23 seconds remaining.
After Raoul Heinen missed the first of a 1-and-1 with 15.2 seconds left for
the Patriots, the Hawks had another chance.
Tynes blocked Amous' driving 8-footer along the left baseline with 2 seconds
left. After Hartford inbounded, Wurtz blocked Aaron Cook's 3-point attempt just
before the final horn sounded.
Jerrell Parker led Hartford with 14 points and eight rebounds. Pierre
Johnson and Ryan Stys each had eight rebounds for the Hawks.
Jon Larranaga scored all 12 of his points in the first half for the
Patriots, who shot just 30.4 percent in the second.
