North Carolina scored twice in the second half to defeat visiting George Mason, 2-0, in a non-conference college men's soccer game Tuesday night at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, NC.
North Carolina, the defending NCAA national champion, won its second straight game to improve to 10-5, while George Mason dropped its third straight game as it fell to 6-4-2.
The teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, but the Tar Heels found the back of the net at 63:50 as Ryan Kneipper scored the first of his two goals on the night. Kneipper iced the victory with an insurance goal at 87:47.
Patriot sophomore goalkeeper John O'Hara had three saves, while Ford Williams made four saves for the Tar Heels. North Carolina held a 13-9 advantage in shots for the game.
George Mason concludes the regular season with seven consecutive Colonial Athletic Association contests, beginning at home this weekend as Virginia Commonwealth and UNC Wilmington visit Fairfax. VCU (ranked tied for 15th in the nation by the NSCAA and 23rd by Soccer America) meets the Patriots at George Mason Stadium Friday at 7 p.m., while UNCW comes calling Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
