James Madison got two first-half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over Army, while George Mason and La Salle played to a 1-1 tie in overtime in the second and final round of the George Mason/Comfort Inn/Kappa Soccer Classic Sunday at George Mason Stadium.
James Madison won the team championship in the tournament by virtue of its two victories, including a 2-1 win over La Salle Friday. George Mason, which scored a 2-1 victory over Army Friday, finished 1-0-1, La Salle was 0-1-1 and Army was 0-2.
James Madison senior Patrice Filin, who had three goals and an assist in the two games, was selected as the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the tournament, while teammate senior goalkeeper Josh Kovolenko (six total saves, one shutout) was chosen as the Defensive MVP. They were joined on the all-tournament team by Dukes junior Rob Overton and sophomore Denny Fulk, George Mason sophomore David Quinn and freshmen Mike Uremovich and Chris Perkins, La Salle senior Brian Blesi and freshman Scott Golden, and Army juniors Jay Bunte and Justin Algor.
In the second game of the day, George Mason got on the scoreboard first as Uremovich scored his second goal of the season at 26:43. Sophomore Helmis Matute started the play with a cross from the left side, and Uremovich gathered it in the penalty area and sent a 10-yard shot past Explorers sophomore goalkeeper Stash Graham (12 saves) into the net.
La Salle took advantage of a Patriot miscue to score its goal in the 77th minute. Junior Bob Buoncristiano sent a corner kick from the right side, which was inadvertently headed toward the goal by a George Mason defender. Patriot sophomore goalkeeper John O'Hara (eight saves) deflected the ball back into the field of play, where Golden drilled in a six-yard shot for his second goal of the season. Neither team could find the back of the net in overtime.
James Madison head coach Tom Martin coached his 500th career game as Filin scored twice and added an assist to lead the Dukes in the day's first game against Army. Filin converted a pass from Fulk at 3:42 to put JMU on the scoreboard, then he picked up an assist as senior Andrew Rutledge put in his deflected shot at 20:55. Carrying a 2-0 lead into the second half, Filin put the game away with his second goal of the day and third of the season at 48:15, again off a pass from Fulk.
George Mason returns to action Saturday as it hosts Manhattan at 7 p.m.
