Old Dominion junior Attila Vendegh scored with less than three minutes left in the second overtime period to lift the Monarchs to a 2-1 victory over George Mason in a Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer game Saturday night at the ODU Soccer Stadium in Norfolk, VA.

Old Dominion improved to 5-4 overall and to 2-0 in the CAA with the victory, while George Mason dropped to 6-2-2 overall and to 1-1 in the CAA. The Patriots are 1-1-2 in overtime games this season and 13-6-11 when playing extra periods since the beginning of the 1995 season.

Vendegh scored his seventh goal of the season and set an ODU record with his 37th career goal at the 107:07 mark of the contest, lofting a shot over charging George Mason goalkeeper sophomore John O'Hara.

Michael Goncalves put the Monarchs on the scoreboard at 6:54 as he scored off an assist by Vendegh, who was the 2001 CAA Player of the Year. The 1-0 lead stood up for Old Dominion until the 70:42 mark, when Patriot junior Mirza Kurspahic intercepted a goal kick and scored his second goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1.

George Mason held a 19-15 advantage in shots on the night, with O'Hara making five saves in goal for the Patriots. Sam Cameron had nine saves for the Monarchs.

Mason's contest with Old Dominion had originally been scheduled for Friday, but the game was postponed due to torrential rains in the Norfolk area. The rescheduled contest caused the Patriots' game at William & Mary Saturday to be postponed to a later date.

George Mason returns to action Saturday as it hosts nationally ranked regional rival Maryland at George Mason Stadium at 7 p.m.
