Mason Sweeps Delaware

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Mason women's volleyball team swept Delaware 3-0 Saturday night at John Linn Gym, with game scores of 30-27, 30-28, 30-19.

The Patriots are now 17-7 overall and 11-2 in the CAA, while the Blue Hens tumble to 9-15 overall and 6-7 in the CAA.

Aline Pereira (Sao Paolo, Brazil) and Shelbylynn McBride (Valrico, FL) paced the Patriot offense with 19 and 12 kills, respectively, while Natalia Porosa (Scarborough, Ontario) had 10 digs. Milena Racic (Pozarevac, Yugoslavia) had nine kills and three block solos, and Jesica Umansky (Buenos Aires, Argentina) had 36 assists.

For Delaware, Liz Ommundsen and Jennifer Daniels each had 10 kills. Ommundsen also had a team-high six digs, tying with Taylor Govaars. Allison Hunter logged 27 assists for the Blue Hens.

Delaware held advantage for a good portion of game one and most of game two, but the Blue Hens were unable to seal the deal in either contest, falling behind 2-0 by intermission.

In the opener, both teams hit extremely well, with Mason holding a .417-to-.353 edge. McBride came out strong, recording eight kills in 10 swings for an .800 attack percentage.

The Blue Hens raced out to a 7-1 lead in game two and didn't relinquish their advantage until Porosa notched a service ace to give Mason the upper-hand, 21-20. Four more ties followed, including one at 28-28, but the Patriots scored the last two points for the win. Pereira and Racic each had seven kills in that game.

After intermission, the Patriots took command of game three, with Pereira cruising to eight kills and Umansky logging a career-high two block solos.

George Mason plays its final home match of the season Sunday against Towson. Seniors Amy Falk (Davis, CA) and Alison Phillips (Hamilton, Scotland) will be honored before the match, which will start at 4 p.m.
