GENEVA, Ohio - The George Mason track and field team set
three meet records and added to its list of ECAC and IC4A qualifiers with an
outstanding showing over the weekend at the SPIRE Institute Division I Invitational
in Geneva, Ohio.
Highlighting the performers for Mason was senior David
Verburg, who set a meet and personal record in the 400m with a time of 45.83.
The time is currently the fastest time in the world and NCAA, the second-fastest in program history, and bested his previous IC4A qualifying mark.
Verburg then joined with junior Adrian Vaughn, senior George
Empty and freshman Angel Coburn in the 4x400m relay, winning the event in a
meet record time of 3:07.29. Also recording an event win for the Patriots was
Empty in the 600m after crossing the finish line in 1:19.04.
The final meet record came from the women's 4x400m relay of
senior Cierra McGee and juniors Daianna Barron, Shavon Briscoe and Dominique
Graham. The quartet finished second in a time of 3:38.32, besting the previous
top meet time of 3:38.56.
Over the two-day meet, Barron also ran the sixth-fastest
time in program history in the 400m, finishing fifth in a time of 54.51. It was a PR for Barron and bested her previous ECAC qualifying time. Senior
Kristin Bethel also added her name to the all-time record list at Mason,
running a PR and second-fastest time in program history in the 600m, finishing
19th in 1:37.27.
For the men, freshman Da'Quan Smalls set PR's in the 60m
(7.13) and 200m (22.05, IC4A), while senior John Jones (200m, 22.09) and Empty
(400m, 48.21) added to Mason's list of IC4A qualifiers.
Three other Patriots finished the meet with PR's, including
junior Katea Jemmott in the 60m (7.81) and 200m (25.67), junior Shavon Briscoe
in the 60m (7.77) and senior Taylor Wheaton in the 400m (56.09, ECAC).
