Debbie Taneyhill returned to the George Mason Women's Basketball program as an assistant coach in 2026, bringing more than three decades of coaching experience and an unmatched connection to the Patriots.
Few individuals have had a greater impact on George Mason Women's Basketball than Taneyhill, whose relationship with the program spans more than two decades as a student-athlete, assistant coach, and head coach.
A George Mason alum, Taneyhill played for the Patriots from 1988-92. She earned Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) All-Rookie Team honors in 1989, was a three-time CAA All-Academic Team selection, and still ranks 12th in program history with 273 career assists.
Following her playing career, Taneyhill joined the Patriots' coaching staff as an assistant coach in 1992 and served in that role through 1997 before being promoted to head coach. During her 11 seasons leading the program (1997-2008), she compiled a 144-164 overall record while guiding George Mason to the first two postseason appearances in program history with Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) berths in 2001 and 2004.
Taneyhill was named the 2001 CAA Coach of the Year and remains second in program history among George Mason Women's Basketball head coaches in both victories and games coached. In recognition of her lasting impact on the university and the program, she was named an Atlantic 10 Legend in 2016.
Beyond her collegiate coaching career, Taneyhill has remained active in athlete development throughout the region. She is the founder of Debbie Taneyhill Elite Athlete Yoga, where she has worked with athletes of all levels, emphasizing performance, recovery, leadership, mental toughness, and overall wellness. She also served as a color commentator for George Mason men's and women's basketball broadcasts on ESPN+ during the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons.
A native of Altoona, Pennsylvania, Taneyhill resides in Fairfax, Virginia, with her fiancé, Troy. She has one son, Jason, who lives in Charlotte, N.C., and works for the Big South Conference. In her free time, Taneyhill enjoys reading, watching college football, and spending time with family and friends.
