Randy Bungard completed his sixth season as associate head coach for the men's and women's track and field programs in 2020-21.
Bungard has more than 25 years of NCAA Division I coaching experience, including head coaching stops Virginia and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and assistant coaching stints at Penn State, Texas and Clemson. A native of Virginia, Bungard has coached numerous NCAA Champions, nearly 100 All-Americans along with Olympic, world and U.S. champions. His expertise spans all areas of track and field as he has coached a NCAA or U.S. champion in the sprints (400-meter dash), middle distance (800-meter run), jumps (long jump) and throws (shot put).
Entering his seventh year at George Mason, Bungard’s athletes have already had an impact on the George Mason and Atlantic 10 record books.
Under Bungard's coaching in 2019, Mason men's 4x400 relay along with sprinter Sarah Moore qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The relay team took Jacksonville by storm during last month's NCAA preliminary in Jacksonville, blitzing past seven powerhouse track programs to qualify for Austin while posting the No. 10 time out of the 24 qualifying relay teams. It's Mason's first relay team to make the NCAA Championship since 2014. Made up of seniors Rico Gomez and Junias Agyei, and juniors Evander Pierreand Tyler Benson, the Patriot relay squad captured the A-10 indoor and outdoor titles in 2018-19.
Moore qualified for Austin in 2019 after running a 52.74 during her 400m quarterfinal. A 13-time A-10 champion and the 2018-19 A-10 title winner in both the indoor and outdoor 400-meter dash, Moore finished her career a two-time national qualifier in the 400m.
Over two years (2016-18), a total of 54 sprinters and hurdlers combined to win 30 Atlantic 10 Conference titles (individual and relay championships). He also coached sprinter Bernard Freeman, who was named the A-10 Track Performer at the 2016 indoor and outdoor conference championships and the 2017 outdoor championship. In 2018, he coached sprinter Sarah Moore, who qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 400-meter dash.
At the 2017 Indoor Atlantic 10 Championships, the men captured championships in the 60-, 200-, 400-, 500-meter runs along with the 60-meter hurdles and the 4x400-meter relay. At the 2017 Outdoor Atlantic 10 Championships, the men won league titles in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes along with the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays.
The sprinters and hurdlers have supplanted marks on George Mason’s top ten performance list on numerous occasions. In 2016, Bernard Freeman tied the Atlantic 10 Championship record in the 60-meter dash at 6.85 seconds. In 2017, Ayo Raymond broke the Atlantic 10 Championship record in the 60-meter dash at 6.82 seconds. Also in 2017, the women’s 4 x 400-meter relay broke the Atlantic 10 Championship indoor record with a time of 3:44.74.
The men’s 4x100-meter relay team set the school record at 39.52 at the 2017 NCAA East Preliminary, breaking the previous record set in 2003 by over a tenth of a second. Both the men’s and women’s 4 x 400-meter relay teams broke the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship records. The men ran a time of 3:10.28, which bested the previous A-10 record of 3:10.43 set in 1998. The women ran a record time of 3:40.15.
Prior to coming to Mason, he spent three seasons at Penn State, where he oversaw the Lion sprints, hurdles and relays contingent. He coached 18 First Team All-Americans and 19 Second Team All-Americans as the Lions claimed three Big Ten Championships (2013 Outdoor and 2014 Indoor and Outdoor Championship). While at Penn State, two of his relay teams - the men's and women's 4x200-meter relay teams - set collegiate national records. He was voted the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year three times at Penn State.
In four years as the head coach of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Bungard coached nine Southland Conference Champions, as well as 37 All-Conference performers. He also led Islander athletes to 48 school-record performances.
While in Charlottesville, as the director and head coach of the University of Virginia cross country and track and field programs, he built the program into a contender in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He led the Cavaliers to conference championships at the ACC Men's Cross Country Championships in 2005 and 2007. He helped the Cavaliers earn 33 All-America finishes, as well as 34 ACC championships. Bungard earned top accolades for his success, being named the ACC Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2001 and was voted the Southeast Region Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year the same season.
In just two years at the University of Texas, Bungard assisted in coaching 11 NCAA Champions and 50 All-Americans. He was part of a Longhorn women’s program that finished third at the 1996 NCAA Indoor Championship and placed second place at the 1996 NCAA Indoor Championship along with a pair of second-place finishes at the 1997 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
Early on in his coaching career, he spent several successful seasons at Clemson University, overseeing 11 All-Americans and 22 ACC champions as an assistant for the women's program from 1988-1983. The Tigers won ACC titles during the 1991 outdoor season and 1992 indoor season.
He has coached athletes in all event areas in track and field, including Olympian Kim Graham, who was a member of the USA’s gold-medal 4x400-meter relay at the 1996 Olympic Games. She was also the U.S. 400-meter champion in 1998. While at East Tennessee State, Bungard coached Angela Baker, a medalist in the shot put at the 1988 NCAA Indoor Championships.
