Ben Herboth

Ben Herboth enters his first year as diving coach of the Patriots for the 2022-23 season.

Herboth joins the George Mason coaching staff after spending the last three years as diving coach at Towson University (2019-22).

Over his three years, Towson divers recorded seven top-three podium finishes and in the classroom, the Tigers had multiple scholar All-Americans.  Under Herboth, Tigers’ divers competed in the NCAA Zone A Championships seven times.

In 2021-22, Herboth led four Towson divers to the NCAA Zone A Championships, while Sarah Digaetano and Alyssa Largay were named Scholar All-Americans.  Six Towson divers competed at the 2022 CAA Conference Championships and all six scored in the finals, with Largay leading the way with a bronze medal in the 3m and a fourth-place finish in the 1m.

During the Covid year (2020-21), Herboth coached senior Will Canny to a pair of silver medals (1m, 3m) and helped Ajani Dorner claim two bronze medals (1m, 3m) at the 2021 CAA Conference Championships.

Prior to Towson, Herboth was the diving coach at California State University Bakersfield.  While at CSU Bakersfield, he coached multiple NCAA Zone E qualifiers every year, multiple Academic All-Americans and both a silver and bronze medalist at the 2017 WAC Championship.

During the 2016-17 season, the CSU Bakersfield diving team shattered every school record on both the men's and women's side.  Herboth coached Carlee Burks, who set program records in both the 1m (311.48) and 3m (337.28), both records that still stand.

Before CSU Bakersfield, Herboth served as the head coach for five different high schools in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina.  He coached multiple top-five finishers at the state North Carolina High School State Championship, including the 2011 4A State Champion.  Herboth founded the Foxcroft East Diving team in Charlotte, NC.

A native of Charlotte, N.C., Herboth grew up diving under current University of Kentucky head coach Ted Hautau, where he was a five-time U.S.A. Diving National Qualifier.  He was the 2002 Junior National silver and bronze medalist and a three-time First Team All-American at East Mecklenburg High School.

Herboth competed for the University of North Carolina where he placed in the top five at the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championships on both the 1m and 3m boards.  As a Tar Heel, he was the 2004 Nike Cup 3m Champion and was the highest point scorer for a UNC swimmer or diver at the 2005 ACC Championships.  Heboth was the recipient of the David F. McGinnis award for Most Outstanding Diver at Chapel Hill for the 2004-05 season.
