Brian Pugh begins his seventh season as assistant coach of the George Mason baseball team for the 2021 season. He is also the recruiting coordinator for the Patriots.
Prior to Mason, Pugh spent three years as the assistant baseball coach at Temple University under head coach Ryan Wheeler. Pugh, who now has 12 years of collegiate coaching experience, spent seven years as an assistant coach and three years as a head coach before arriving to Temple in 2011. Among his duties at Temple were coordinating the Owls’ pitching program, responsibility for recruiting, coordinating the placement of players with summer teams and serving as the team’s liaison with the Office of Compliance and Student Services.
Pugh spent three years as the head baseball coach at Arcadia University in Glenside, Pa. before his arrival at Temple, where he was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the program. During those three seasons, Pugh coached two Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area and three All-Commonwealth Conference players. Seven of his student-athletes were named to the Middle Atlantic Conference's Academic Honor Roll.
Pugh spent the 2008 season at Wesley College (DE) under head coach Tripp Keister. During his one-year stint as a member of the Wolverine’s coaching staff, Pugh was responsible for developing both the throwing and conditioning routines of the pitching staff while assisting with recruiting and scouting. During the 2008 campaign, Pugh guided his top two starters to ERAs under 3.00, and impressive combined win-loss totals of 14-2 and 172 strikeouts, while helping the Wolverines to a 27-15 overall mark and a 10-8 showing in their first year as members of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC). In 2008 Wesley made appearances in both the CAC and ECAC South Championships.
Pugh also has extensive experience coaching in two of the nation’s most highly regarded summer collegiate leagues, the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) and the Cape Cod Baseball League. During his tenure, he worked with over 50 players who have gone on to be drafted or sign free-agent contracts with professional organizations. Most notably, 1st rounders Greg Reynolds (2nd overall pick – Colorado Rockies) and Brad Lincoln (4th overall pick - Pittsburgh Pirates) were selected in 2006, as well as Zach Jackson (supplemental 1st round – Toronto Blue Jays) in 2004. Jackson made his major league debut in 2006 with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Pugh has also served as the Pitching Coach at Cumberland County College (2002, 2004), Richard Stockton College (2003) and Wilmington University (2005).
A product of Laurel High School (DE), Pugh earned both All-Conference and All-State honors as a pitcher during his junior and senior years before moving on the University of Maine. While at Maine, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and Physical Education while pitching for the Black Bears.
Pugh and his wife Meghan reside in Burke, Va. with their daughter, Ally.
