RICHMOND, Va. – Facing Atlantic 10 opponents for the first time this season, the George Mason men’s swimming and diving team has the lead over Davidson, while the women’s team earned a win over the Wildcats on the first day of competition at the Richmond Duals in Richmond, Va.
The Mason men’s team won six events and has a 105-100 lead over Davidson at the halfway point of the two-day event.
Junior Alec Morin won the 50-yard freestyle (21.32) and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (46.74). Freshman Attila Kiss swam to a victory in the 1,650-freestyle (15:57.91), with junior Steven Craig finishing second in the event (16:07.09). Kiss had a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.69).
Senior Ryan Frayne posted a first place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.57), with freshman Garrett Anderson touching the wall second (2:08.80).
Freshman Ryan Donnelly recorded a first place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.20), with classmate Logan Eubanks placing second (1:52.57). In the 200-yard butterfly, junior Matthew Lynch registered a second place finish (1:53.74) for the Patriots.
The combination of freshmen Christopher Stankiewicz and Eubanks, senior Zepher Begnell and Lynch gave Mason the win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:33.91). Morin, Stankiewicz, Begnell and senior Evan Owens combined to finish second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:09.30).
Senior Paul Helfgott claimed the top spot in the one-meter springboard diving event. His score of 270.70 gave him the win by 63 points. Freshman Wilson Sullivan was third (157.45) and classmate William Dubuque was fourth (144.95).
The Patriots and Wildcats will compete in the final 11 events of the meet on Saturday.

Last season, the Mason men’s team held a 118-81 advantage over Davidson going into day two.
On the women’s side, Mason finished first in four individual events on Friday and defeated Davidson 151.5-147.5. The Patriots will move on to face Duquesne in the winner’s bracket on Saturday. The Dukes earned their first win of the season with a 158-135 victory over the Spiders on Friday. Richmond's women's swimming and diving team has won the Atlantic 10 title each of the last six seasons.
Senior Sydney Fisher finished first in both the 50-yard freestyle (23.36) and 100-yard butterfly (55.26) on Friday. Junior Dorothy Reilly won the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.01). Senior Sarah Brallier touched the wall first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.82) and finished second in the 200-yard IM (2:09.04).
Senior Erin Schulte recorded a third place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:54.17), with classmate Megan DeJong placing fifth in the event (18:00.01). Schulte also took third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.48).
Seniors Marla Albanese and Steff Maurer, junior Rachel Williams and Fisher combined for a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:33.22). In the 200-yard medley relay, junior Amy Tansill, Fisher, Albanese and Williams placed third (1:47.37).
Last season, the Patriots women’s team fell to Richmond 184-110 on the first day of competition.
Day two of the Richmond Duals begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with the diving competition at the Robins Center Natatorium, while the swimming events will begin at 10 a.m. at Swim RVA.
