Washington Nominated for MLS Works Humanitarian of the Year

FAIRFAX, Va. – Former George Mason men’s soccer standout Taylor Washington’s work off the field has drawn attention for consideration of a prestigious MLS honor.

Washington was named one of 20 nominees for the 2016 MLS Works Humanitarian of the Year. Washington is in his rookie season with the Philadelphia Union after he spent three years on the pitch at George Mason.

“This is a great honor for Taylor Washington to be nominated as a rookie for this incredible honor,” George Mason head coach Greg Andrulis said. “Taylor is a unique and truly special person who has always been an inspiration to others. His heart and passion are a true testament to his faith, family and friends.”

In his first year with the Union, Washington has participated in several community service programs such as attending a career day visit for a Hispanic youth group, participating in the READ program and attending an event supporting pediatric cancer patients. He has also made time to visit 9-year-old Dominic Liples, who is battling brain tumors.

This season, Washington has been loaned out to Steel FC for 18 games. He has contributed on the backline, playing in seven of the Steel’s shutouts. He has also played in one game for the Union in a friendly against the EPL’s Crystal Palace.

Washington played at Mason from 2013-15, starting 52 games. He was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team as a sophomore in 2013 and was named to the NSCAA All-Midwest Third Team last fall. In January, he was selected 23rd overall by the Philadelphia Union in the MLS SuperDraft.
