FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics
Marvin Lewis announced today a five-year contract extension through the 2030-31 season for
Andrew Gerard, head coach of the men's and women's cross country and track and field programs.
Gerard, who has more than three decades of collegiate coaching experience, has overseen the Patriots track and cross country teams since July 2005. Under his watch, George Mason has developed into a top mid-major track and field destination, regularly sending athletes to the NCAA East Region preliminaries and the NCAA Championships.
"
Andrew Gerard has been a tremendous leader of our program and our student-athletes for more than two decades," said Lewis. " His commitment to developing young people, building a championship culture, and representing George Mason the right way has created sustained success and real momentum. We're excited about what's ahead and confident Andrew and his staff will continue to elevate our track and field and cross country programs."
During his tenure, Gerard has guided the Patriots to 17 conference championships. George Mason captured three CAA titles, all in men's outdoor track, under Gerard from 2010-12 before adding 14 Atlantic 10 championships after the Patriots moved to the conference in 2013-14.
The A10 titles include men's cross country (2014), men's indoor track and field (2017, 2019), women's indoor track and field (2014, 2025), men's outdoor track and field (2015, 2016, 2019, 2025) and women's outdoor track and field (2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2023).
Gerard's sustained success has also earned him 18 conference Coach of the Year honors, including three in the CAA and 15 in the Atlantic 10. He has received the award seven times in men's outdoor track and field (2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2025), five times in women's outdoor track and field (2014, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2023), three times in men's indoor track and field (2016, 2017, 2019), twice in women's indoor track and field (2014, 2025) and once in men's cross country (2014).
"When I was offered the position at George Mason 21 years ago, I had no idea I'd be here two decades on," said Gerard. "But first, I'm incredibly proud of the legacy that all the student-athletes, support staff, and assistants have created over the years. And second, I'm equally energized by what I believe George Mason can continue to achieve. I'm tremendously thankful to President Washington,
Marvin Lewis, and the entire senior leadership team for offering me the opportunity to continue contributing to what I feel is an athletic department on the cusp of another big leap forward. It's crazy to say it, but I absolutely look forward to coaching and working at George Mason into the 2030s!"
A 1990 Cum Laude graduate of Colgate University, where he was a four-year letterman with the Red Raider cross country and track and field teams, Gerard came to George Mason after spending the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons as the cross country head coach and assistant track and field coach at Stanford. He guided the Cardinal to the Men's Cross Country Title in 2003, earning USTCA National Coach of the Year honors.
Today's contract extension reflects George Mason's continued confidence in Gerard's ability to develop student-athletes on and off the track while maintaining a championship-level program in the Atlantic 10.
