DURHAM, N.C. — George Mason senior Vijay "JJ" Powell opened his fourth collegiate season in historic fashion, capturing his first career individual tournament title Tuesday at the Rod Myers Invitational at Duke University Golf Club.

Powell led the Patriots to a fifth-place finish in the 13-team field, posting a two-round total of 134 (68-66) to finish at 10-under at the par 72, 7,154-yard course.

Powell was the clubhouse leader heading into Tuesday's finish after posting a 68 in the first round and a partial finish to the second. Today, Powell completed the remaining seven holes and finished with a 66, which puts him in the record books for the seventh-lowest individual round in George Mason history. Powell's 10-under score through 36 holes also ranks second all-time at Mason, trailing only Vaughn McMeans' 11-under performance at the 2025 FGCU West Bay Collegiate.

The Midlothian, Va. native bested the runner-up Kelvin Hernanadez from UNCG by three strokes. He led the 81-player field with 13 birdies, including nine in the second round. Powell had a 6-hole birdie streak on the back nine in the second round.

Mason's fifth-place (-5) finish came in a competitive field. UNCG earned tournament champion with a 20-under par score, besting UNCW by five strokes. Harvard and host Duke finished third and fourth, while Xavier was one-stroke behind the Patriots for sixth place.

The Patriots continue their 2026-27 season at the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational hosted by West Virginia on Oct. 5-6.
