EUGENE, Ore. – Abby Weening capped off George Mason's appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, concluding the Patriots' outdoor season at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. Weening competed in the women's heptathlon over two days, June 12–13.
Athletes automatically qualified for the national championship meet by posting one of the top 24 heptathlon scores in the nation during the outdoor season. Weening opened competition with a strong performance, matching her personal best of 13.90 seconds in the 100m hurdles, the 12th-fastest time in the field. She followed with a clearance of 1.72m in the high jump, finishing 13th in the event, and recorded a personal-best throw of 11.43m in the shot put.
Unfortunately, a disqualification in the 200m due to a lane violation at the end of Friday's competition cost Weening valuable points in the overall standings.
She returned to competition on Saturday, posting marks of 5.80m in the long jump, 30.18m in the javelin throw, and 2:29.18 in the 800m to complete the heptathlon with 4,467 points
Weening concludes her four-year career at George Mason after achieving her goal of representing the Patriots on the national stage at the NCAA Championships. She leaves a lasting legacy in the program record books, earning places on several all-time performance lists.
In the indoor lists, Weening ranks 10th in school history in the 60m hurdles (8.73), sixth in the high jump (1.73m), and seventh in the pentathlon (3,687 points).
Her past outdoor season proved to be a breakout campaign. She moved to sixth all-time in the 100m hurdles (13.90), second in the high jump (1.82m), and third in the heptathlon (5,622 points). Along the way, she established personal bests in each of the seven heptathlon disciplines and earned her place among the most accomplished multi-event athletes in George Mason history.
