DAYTON, Ohio – Senior right fielder
Drew Canody drove two runs in the 10th inning to lift the Patriots to 6-4 victory over the Flyers to even the series at Woerner Field in Dayton, Ohio.
THE LEADOFF
- Redshirt-junior Owen Stewart pitched five innings in relief to earn his fifth win.
- Senior shortstop Owen Clyne had two hits including his sixth home run and three RBI.
- Canody had two hits, two RBI and scored two runs.
- The Patriots rallied three times in the game to tie or take the lead.
Dayton (28-21, 12-14 A-10) took the lead against George Mason (24-24, 14-12 A-10) sophomore starter
Jake Drumm in the bottom of the third. Junior center fielder Michael Smith drove in a run with a two-out single to put the Flyers in front, 1-0.
In the top of the fourth, Clyne led off with his sixth home run of the season off Dayton junior starter John Delgado to tie the score.
Dayton reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Flyers loaded the bases with back-to-back doubles and a hit batter. With one out, the Flyers plated a run with a sacrifice fly for a 2-1 lead.
George Mason loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with two singles and a walk. Clyne delivered with a two-out, two-run single to make it 3-2 Patriots. In the bottom of the inning, Flyers freshman right fielder Grayson Carpenter hit a solo home run to tie the game.
In the bottom of the eighth, Flyers junior catcher Ryan MacDougall hit a solo home run to put Dayton in front, 4-3.
The Patriots rallied in the ninth against Dayton sophomore reliever Jason Bello. Canody dropped down a bunt single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman second baseman
Julius Bagnerise reached on an error by the Flyers center fielder, with Canody scoring on the play to tie the score, 4-4.
In the top of the 10th, sophomore left fielder
Lucas Alberti led off with a walk and graduate student center fielder
Luciano Terilli singled. Both baserunners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by junior first baseman
Jake Butler. After senior designated hitter
Evan Blanchard was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Canody ripped a two-run single to left field for the 6-4 final score.
For the Patriots, Drumm allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits in 5.0 innings. Stewart (5-4) gave up two runs on four hits in 5.0 innings and earned the win.
Clyne went 3-for-5 with a solo home run and three RBI. Terilli Was 2-for-5 with a double and scored a run. Canody finished 2-for-2 with a two-run single and scored two runs.
For the Flyers, Delgado allowed three runs on six hits in 6.2 innings. Bello (0-1) gave up an unearned run on three hits in 1.2 innings and took the loss.
The Patriots and Flyers wrap up the series on Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for noon at Woerner Field in Dayton, Ohio.
