NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The George Mason University rowing team showcased the culmination of weeks of tireless preparation during a strong finish at the Novak Memorial Metropolitan Championship Saturday.
The Patriots posted six top-3 finishes between heats and finals on the day, highlighted by a heat victory by the team's Varsity 4+ crew and a pair of second-place finishes in finals from the Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 8+.
"It was a very successful day for our team," head coach
Joseph Richards said. "We had good performances across every boat we fielded. I'm pleased with the way the team competed today, but more importantly, I'm really proud of the work and the effort they put in over the past few weeks when the results were not going our way and we weren't leaving regattas feeling we had performed to our potential. They stuck with it and continued to work hard. There's a lot of effort that went into this point, feeling like we have momentum going into our championship season."
George Mason's Varsity 8+ boat put together an outstanding second place finish during the team's race in 7:15.84. GMU finished more than three seconds in front of third-place Iona and more than 24 seconds in front of fourth-place LIU.
The Second Varsity 8+ also finished second in an excellent final race, crossing the finish line in 7:35.72. The Patriots performed far stronger than the majority of the field, as GMU was more than 30 seconds in front of the third place team (Fordham B). It marked a strong improvement over the team's fourth-place finish in its morning heat.
After winning its heat in 8:38.10, the Patriot Varsity 4+ boat also performed admirably in its final, finishing third in a time of 8:16.94. That time placed the Green & Gold more than 10 seconds in front of fourth-place Binghamton.
The Second Varsity 4+ also tallied a top-3 placement in its heat, crossing the finish line in 8:23.62.
The Patriots wrap up the 2025-26 campaign in two weeks (May 16) when the Green & Gold head to Pennsauken, N.J., for the annual Atlantic 10 Championship.
