FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason University honored Jay and Carolyn Marsh (posthumously) with the Mason Medal, the university's highest honorary award, during commencement exercises on Thursday, May 14.

The Mason Medal stands as the university's highest honorary recognition and is awarded to individuals whose extraordinary service, generosity, and commitment have made a lasting impact on the university and its students.

Jay and Carolyn Marsh left behind an extraordinary legacy at George Mason, retiring together in 2021 after a combined 90 years of dedicated service to George Mason Athletics. Their impact, spanning generations of student-athletes, coaches, and staff, reflects a lifetime commitment defined by loyalty, leadership, and an unwavering belief in the university. Carolyn passed away in 2025, but her influence and spirit remain deeply woven into the fabric of Mason Athletics.

Their shared journey reflects not only professional achievement but also a deep personal connection to the institution and its people.

"George Mason has always meant more than a university to Carolyn and me; it's been our family," said Jay Marsh. "Carolyn dedicated her heart to George Mason every day, and I know she would be incredibly honored by this recognition. We have always deeply believed in George Mason Athletics and the life-changing opportunities it creates for the student-athletes. Receiving the Mason Medal is truly humbling, and we are grateful for the friendships, memories, and experiences that have enriched our lives over the years."

Together, their generosity and dedication played a significant role in advancing the university's mission, both academically and athletically.

Carolyn began her Mason career in December 1975 as a sports information assistant before becoming the trusted executive assistant to the men's basketball program. Known for her care and personal touch, Carolyn built lasting relationships with student-athletes, many of whom remained in touch long after their playing days. She often described her role simply: caring for the players like a mother.

Jay's connection to George Mason began as a student-athlete on the basketball team.

In 1976 he began a remarkable administrative career that spanned nearly five decades. Jay became synonymous with George Mason Athletics operations, overseeing facilities, managing events, supporting fundraising efforts, and ensuring a first-class experience for student-athletes and fans alike. Beginning his career as a business manager, Jay led the Patriot Club for seven seasons starting in 1988, before rising to the role of senior associate athletic director for events and facilities.

The Marsh family's support has touched countless student-athletes and programs across George Mason Athletics, helping provide resources and opportunities that strengthen the overall student-athlete experience. Their legacy lives on through the countless lives they influenced and the enduring high standards they helped establish.

The couple's generosity includes an endowed scholarship for basketball student-athletes and a $50,000 contribution toward the renovation of the men's and women's basketball locker rooms in recognition of Carolyn's lasting influence. The men's basketball film room bears her name, a tribute to her decades of behind-the-scenes impact on the program.

The Marshes become just the third and fourth individuals connected to George Mason Athletics to receive the prestigious Mason Medal. Former men's basketball coach Jim Larrañaga was honored in 2016, ten years after leading the Patriots on their historic run to the Final Four, while longtime team physician Dr. Frank Pettrone received the award in 2014 for his decades of service and commitment to George Mason student-athletes.

"Together, Jay and Carolyn represent the very best of who we are," said Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Marvin Lewis. "Bestowing the Mason Medal upon the Marshes is a fitting tribute to a lifetime of unparalleled service, ensuring their legacy at George Mason University will be cherished for generations to come."

The Marshes' contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including Jay's 1989 Alumnus of the Year award and the School of Business's Prominent Patriot Award. He continues to serve the university as a member of the Patriot Club Advisory Board.
